We are excited to share this Taan documentary. This video documents some of our forestry operations. It emphasizes our efforts in restoration and shows some of the people that are doing this important work.

As part of the FSC® commitments, Taan has recently completed the 2021 Annual Monitoring Report.

This is a public announcement to inform our community that Taan Forest will be installing a road gate as a traffic control device on the Jungle South Resource Road. The gate will be installed approximately 285 metres from the highway entrance allowing access to spur JUN1600. The Council of the Haida Nation and the Province of BC have authorized this gate installation.

An audit of Taan Forest Limited Partnership’s tree farm licence 60 and Taan Forest Ltd.’s forest licence A87661 on Haida Gwaii has found the company complied with almost all requirements of the Forest and Range Practices Act (FRPA) and the Wildfire Act.

Taan Forest has been using LiDAR technology since the first scan of our tenures in 2015. Over the course of the past decade, this practice has become the golden standard due to its ability to provide exceptional topographic survey data.

Taan Forest supports value-added processing and manufacturing on Xaayda Gwaay.yaay/ Xaadáa Gwáay Haida Gwaii and is excited to announce a new pilot program* that offers discounted log pricing for on-island small-scale sawyers and sawmills. The program details and eligibility requirements are outlined below.

Over the last two years, Taan Forest Limited Partnership (Taan Forest) has utilized over $1.6 million in funding from the Forest Enhancement Society of BC (FESBC) to support two projects focused on ecological restoration of close to 300 hectares of riparian and habitat area in Xaayda Gwaay.yaay Haida Gwaii.

Taan Forest welcomes the Forest Practices Board to Haida Gwaii to conduct a routine General Audit on Taan Operations relating to Provincial Legislation Requirements on TFL 60 and FLTC A87661 the week of September 20th to 24th.

The Taan Management Strategy focuses on a proactive approach to goshawk management within Taan tenures to manage for Goshawk habitat and forage needs based on past and current conditions of individual known and potential Goshawk territories.  The strategy follows current legislated requirements but at an individual territory level of forage use, habitat enhancement techniques and prey management.

Taan Forest is committed to creating a successful forest business and economy on Haida Gwaii based on the management objectives of the Haida Gwaii Land Use Objectives Order (HGLUOO). Unique to this order is the management of cultural heritage and forest features, culturally significant wildlife, significant protection of fish-bearing waters in addition to principles of Ecosystem-Based Management.

All Taan staff and contractors who may fight wildfire must have annual wildfire safety and suppression training. On July 9th, 2021, we held our most recent wildfire training, and we currently have over 60 trained persons within the Taan Forest organization.

Q: How do I access firewood from Taan Forest’s operating areas?

The construction of resource roads is to develop and protect local natural resources. Logging trucks and firefighting equipment must be able to use the roads without delay. If you choose to use resource roads for recreation access, please do so with care by following these important safety tips.

In 2021 we have already planted over 210,000 seedlings. The extra effort required to ensure successful ts’uu cedar plantings are what makes these numbers truly extraordinary; each is staked in place and protected with a tree cone to guard against browsing k’aad deer.

The Council of the Haida Nation, Canadian Coast Guard, BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy and Taan Forest were the Unified Command who oversaw the Foss 153 Diesel Spill Diinan Kahlii Dinan Bay, Haida Gwaii.
