Announcement: Expansion of Value Added Program

Taan Forest supports value-added processing and manufacturing on Xaayda Gwaay.yaay/ Xaadáa Gwáay Haida Gwaii and is excited to announce a new pilot program* that offers discounted log pricing for on-island small-scale sawyers and sawmills. The program details and eligibility requirements are outlined below.

 

PILOT PROGRAM DETAILS

The purpose of this pilot program is to support and grow value added processing and manufacturing businesses operating on Xaayda Gwaay.yaay/ Xaadáa Gwáay Haida Gwaii by providing access to all harvested species of logs at a discounted price.
This expansion starts November 1, 2021.

The discounted pricing will be offered on a limited supply of logs available until March 31, 2022, and the following are specific program details:

  • Pricing will be discounted by 25% of market price**

  • All harvested species will be made available at Ferguson Sort (unless advised otherwise)

  • Logs must be picked up from the Ferguson Sort

  • Logs must be used in value-add operations and cannot be resold

  • The volume for the program is up to 5,000 m3 that will be available until March 31, 2022***

  • A completed application form must be submitted and approved

  • Applications can be submitted on an ongoing basis until volume maximum is reached

  • Limits and conditions may apply depending on program demand, species and grade availability

 ELIGIBILITY

The following conditions must be met to be considered eligible for the program:

  • Applicants must be on-island small-scale sawyers and sawmills

  • Applicants must have no outstanding debt owed to Taan Forest

*Taan expects to refine and further improve our support for local value-added businesses on Haida Gwaii based on the response of this program.

**Market prices will be provided during log purchase inquiry for the log grade and species requested and will be effective for 30 days.

***If there’s demand for more volume before the end of March 31, 2022, Taan will increase the volume for the program by all species. The program is projected to offer 10,000m³ annually.
