Taan Forest Yukon Unversity Field Tour - 2026
Students and staff of Yukon Univeristy’s Environmental Monitoring Program near the Didguusii Mill site at Ferguson B
Hands-on learning, meaningful connections, and time spent on the land—this is what made our recent visit with Yukon University’s Environmental Monitoring Certificate Program so special.
On April 30, we were pleased to welcome students and staff for a tour of Taan Forest operations.
From the moment the group arrived, the day was grounded in shared curiosity, thoughtful discussion, and a genuine interest in how forestry work connects to stewardship on Haida Gwaii.
This year Taan had the honour of hosting students from the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Nation, whose heritage originates at the mouth of the Tr’ondëk or Klondike River.
The Environmental Monitoring Certificate Program prepares students for entry-level field work with First Nations and other governments, industry, research teams, and environmental services organizations.
Guided by Taan Forest staff Drew Cook, Charlie Richards, and K’aaydalaang | Jonah Gladstone, the group explored the Haida tenures and took a closer look at some of the real-world challenges and responsibilities involved in forestry today.
Experiences like this create space for conversations rooted in community knowledge and respect for the land and connect classroom learning with the realities of field work.
Discussions covered the impacts of past logging practices on the island, cultural features management, riparian restoration, and riparian protection measures under the Haida Gwaii Land Use Objectives Order.
Among the highlights were conversations about protection measures for Taan black bear, the development of artificial den sites, and the continued growth of the Didguusii Mill—powerful examples of forestry, stewardship, and innovation working together.
These examples help show that environmental work is not only about identifying impacts, but also about designing thoughtful solutions that support ecosystems and communities over time.
Haawa | Thank you to the students and staff for visiting us—we wish you all the very best as you continue your studies and move toward exciting careers ahead.
