Taan Forest community Update
We know how important it is to keep Haida Citizens and the broader community informed and engaged. Taan Forest would like to share an update on our current operations and the conditions shaping our work.
Current log market conditions, Fee-in-Lieu charges and tariffs continue to place pressure on Taan Forest’s financial performance. At present, only portions of our log profile are operating profitably. These realities influence our harvest planning, road investments and overall work levels across the organization and our contractors. Longer-term projections indicate declining production, reduced contractor and employee work opportunities, road closures and significantly lower local-spend if current conditions persist. These are planning scenarios intended to be transparent about risk and trajectory, not predetermined decisions.
In response to current conditions, Taan is implementing several short-term measures, including halting operations in unprofitable blocks, reducing road grading, delaying non-essential road maintenance, reallocating bridges to essential areas and limiting contractor work due to reduced operating areas and safety-related phase congestion.
We recognize the impacts these conditions have on our team, contractors, crews, and families. We also understand that reduced road maintenance has implications for access to important cultural resources. As we navigate these challenging market conditions, Taan Forest remains fully committed to the long-term stability and wellbeing of our communities. We are actively exploring opportunities to diversify our operations, pursue new funding avenues, and focusing on our financial resilience. Our goal is to maintain stability wherever possible while continuing to support stewardship, Haida and local employment and economic activity.
We care deeply about the people and communities of Xaayda Gwaay.yaay Haida Gwaii. Every decision we make is guided by our responsibility to manage the land respectfully, operate safely, and contribute positively to Xaayda Gwaay.yaay Haida Gwaii. While the current environment presents real challenges, we are working hard to adapt, improve, and chart a sustainable path forward
Hawaa thank you for your continued understanding, support, and engagement. We look forward to ongoing dialogue and to working together toward a strong and resilient future.
Sincerely,
Jeff Mosher, RPF
Chief Forester
